WEST JORDAN — A Herriman man was hit and killed by a TRAX train Tuesday night, police said.

Riley Shults, 22, was likely talking on his cellphone shortly after 10 p.m. when he was fatally hit at 8600 S. 3200 West, said West Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Roberts.

Shults was two blocks from the Jordan Valley station at the time. A passerby almost immediately saw Shults on the ground and called in the emergency, Roberts said.

The train went to a full stop right away after hitting Shults, Roberts said.

Shults was apparently walking by himself in the area. Police are still investigating the circumstances that led to him being hit and killed.
