HONOLULU (AP) — A Hawaiian Airlines plane heading to Kailua-Kona from Honolulu made an emergency landing on Maui.

Hawaiian Airlines says in a statement the plane developed a problem in its left engine after taking off at 6:55 a.m. Tuesday. The flight crew diverted to Kahului, where firefighters sprayed the engine with foam after it landed at 7:26 a.m.

Hawaiian says the plane was towed to the gate.

State Department of Transportation spokesman Tim Sakahara says smoke was coming from the engine but no fire was visible.

He says no injuries were reported and airport operations returned to normal less than an hour after the incident.

Hawaiian Airlines says 73 passengers and five crew members were on board. Hawaiian says it's taking the passengers to Kailua-Kona on other flights.
