SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Attorney General's Office is asking a federal judge to block the Ute Indian Tribe from proceeding with a wrongful death lawsuit against 11 current and former city, county and state police officers.
Assistant Attorney General Randy Hunter says the suit filed in Ute Tribal Court in March is virtually the same as one filed by the parents of Todd Murray in 2009, and the tribal court lacks jurisdiction to hear the case.
Last year, a federal judge ruled against the parents, saying the 21-year-old Murray was not murdered by a Vernal police officer after a 2007 chase as they alleged.
The judge found the Ute tribal member died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in northeastern Utah.
