PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and the city teachers' union have announced a tentative agreement on a new contract that includes pay raises of 1 percent, 1.75 percent and 1.5 percent in each of the deal's three years.
Elorza, Superintendent of Schools Susan Lusi and union president Maribeth Calabro unveiled the deal Thursday. The union represents about 1,900 public school teachers in the capital city. The agreement now needs approval from union members and the City Council.
The teachers' union rejected a previous proposal in September, citing concerns over proposals including a new compensation system that would reward teachers for taking on extra responsibilities. That proposal has been dropped.
The tentative contract agreement includes additional planning time for high school teachers and more decision-making authority for officials at individual schools.
