ST. George, Utah (AP) -- A lightning strike hit an Ivins home yesterday, triggering a fire that destroyed the house.
Ivins Public Safety Department Deputy Chief Dale Williams says the strike hit about 1 a.m. Thursday. He says lightning traveled through the home's electrical wiring, starting several small fires in the attic.
Fire crews needed nearly three hours to put the blaze out. Williams says part of the roof had to be removed to make sure the fire was completely extinguished.
The two families who share the residence heard the strike and smelled smoke. Williams says they families were able to get out safely, but are now homeless.
Gary McChain of Salina says his son's family lost everything in the blaze and has no insurance.
