HOUGHTON, Mich. (AP) — Officials at Michigan Technological University have approved a preliminary tuition increase of 3.9 percent.

Michigan Tech's Board of Control announced the increase Friday as part of a preliminary budget that it passed for the upcoming fiscal year. Leaders say the numbers could change after the Michigan Legislature acts on higher education appropriations and tuition caps.

The board of the school in the Upper Peninsula community of Houghton also approved issuing $25 million in bonds to pay for renovations to student living space and other safety improvements.

Additionally, the board voted to change its name to the Board of Trustees.
