CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A group of Nevada Assembly Republicans who cast deciding votes against a controversial "bathroom bill" earlier this week said they were motivated by small-government ideals. Five Assembly Republicans broke rank and joined Democrats to kill the bill. The measure would have required students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their biological sex. It drew sharp criticism from Democrats and transgender advocates who feared it would lead to bullying.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Union members say they're protesting for the third time this legislative session in hopes of keeping pressure on Nevada lawmakers to support pro-labor policies. The AFL-CIO is organizing simultaneous rallies this afternoon in Las Vegas and Carson City. The events aren't coinciding with hearings on any particular issues, but the group is challenging bills that restrict collective bargaining, alter public employee pension plans and further limit the use of prevailing wages, which are a sort of minimum wage for contractors.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 21-year-old Los Angeles fashion designer is suing Las Vegas police and an officer she says smashed her face into a glass table during her arrest last August outside a Strip nightclub. Ariana Mason alleges in a lawsuit that she suffered broken teeth and facial gashes from broken glass. It concedes she punched the officer, but alleges that he didn't initially identify himself.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 15-year-old has surrendered to police following the death of an innocent bystander in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting. KLAS-TV reports that Metro Police announced on their Facebook page that the teen's mother turned him in.
