Lance Bandley ReportingFormer South African missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are reacting to the news of two sister missionaries being attacked.
It's only been a few years since Damon Deru served his two years in the South Africa-Durban mission.
"My heart immediately went out to the families," says Deru.
Deru says he's been getting a lot of questions from people, asking him about his time on his mission. He says Durbin is the smallest of the three South African missions and says about 10 percent of the 150 missionaries are sisters.
"It's just like a lot of other missions in the world. The people there are good, God-loving people. And it's just a small minority that do things like this," says Deru.
Deru says the sisters usually serve in the cities and the elders will serve further out into areas that might be considered more dangerous.
