RAHWAY, N.J. (AP) — The new mayor of one New Jersey city wants to boost his salary to $72,000 after cutting his predecessor's to $21,000 when he served on the City Council.
Rahway Mayor Samson Steinman says former Mayor Rick Proctor did not work full time.
Steinman tells the Home News Tribune (http://mycj.co/1NPCgdb ) he deserves the $51,000 raise because he intends to be a full-time mayor once he resigns from his $45,000-a-year job as business administrator in Bound Brook.
Steinman says he would save $80,000 a year by eliminating the city's business administrator position. He would also fulfil the role of the assistant business administrator, who retired this year.
Rahway occupies 4 square miles and is home to more than 28,000 residents.
A hearing and vote on the salary is scheduled for May 11.
