DELLE, Tooele County — A Layton man was identified Wednesday as the man killed in an I-80 pileup that injured as many as 25 people on Tuesday.

Robert John Eggli, 65, was killed in in the crash caused by heavy winds Tuesday on westbound I-80 near the small town of Delle, the Utah Highway Patrol confirmed.

Six semitrailers and 11 other vehicles were caught in the pileup when heavy winds about 12:20 p.m. made it nearly impossible for drivers to see, UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said. One truck driver slowed down when dust and dirt in the air reduced visibility, triggering a chain-reaction crash when the semitrailer was hit by other drivers who were unable to see.

The crash remained under investigation Wednesday, Royce said.

Westbound I-80 was closed for just over six hours Tuesday following the crash as emergency personnel, including eight ambulances and 11 tow trucks, responded and attempted to clear the wreckage. The road re-opened just after 7 p.m. Eastbound I-80 was closed to high-profile vehicles.

Of about 25 people injured in the crash, 18 were transported for medical treatment, Royce reported. UHP was unaware of anyone who remained hospitalized Wednesday.
