MURRAY — Intermountain Medical Center has opened a mother's milk donation center to help moms who are unable to produce breast milk.
The center, located at the Women and Newborn Center at the main hospital at 5063 S. Cottonwood Street, will also serve as collection center for milk and provide proper blood testing for donors.
Milk brought to the Murray center will be frozen and shipped to the Mother's Milk Bank in Denver. The milk is then pasteurized and dispensed to hospitals throughout the country to help mothers who cannot supply enough milk for their baby's needs.
"This is a great opportunity to be able to help babies right here in our own community and across the country have the best start at life possible," said Lori Eining, a nurse and Intermountain Medical Center's director of women's services.
Potential milk donors are screened and tested to make sure that they are healthy and free of infectious diseases. The women must also be able to meet their own baby's needs first, according to donation requirements.
