But the president of Vanuatu (vah-noo-AH'-too) says his nation has lost years of development progress and must "start anew." He says six people are known dead on Port Vila. But he doesn't know about the other islands because communications are down.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine police say government forces have captured the leader of a new Muslim rebel group in the south who has been linked to bombings and a beheading and accused of providing sanctuary to two terror suspects wanted by the United States. A police report says government troops arrested Mohammad Ali Tambako and five of his men late Sunday.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A wealthy eccentric linked to two killings and his wife's disappearance is now in custody. Robert Durst was arrested Saturday in New Orleans by the FBI on a warrant from Los Angeles for the murder of Susan Berman 15 years ago. The arrest came just before the finale in an HBO show about his life in which he apparently said to himself he "killed them all." But it's not clear what he meant.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is warning that he won't hold a confirmation vote for Loretta Lynch as attorney general until the Senate completes work on a bill designed to curb human trafficking. Progress on the bill is stalled over a dispute about a provision regarding funding for abortions that McConnell says has been federal policy for almost 40 years.
BOSTON (AP) — Bostonians know that this winter was clearly different than most others they've experienced. It turns out it's been the area's snowiest season going back to 1872. The official measurement of 108.6 inches at Logan International Airport on Sunday night topped a season record of 107.9 inches set in 1995-96. Forecasters note that snow can still mount up this year.
