(KSL News) -- A West Valley City man accidentally shot himself in the leg after a date with his girlfriend.

Police say the man was dropping his girlfriend off at home near 4300 West 3000 South when they ran into the girlfriend's brother. The two men started fighting. The brother told the man to leave, then suddenly a gun fired.

The brother said he had no idea the man was armed. He thought the noise came from fireworks. But the man was carrying a gun and somehow shot himself.

He lost a lot of blood and the bullet fractured a femur.

He was rushed to LDS Hospital in critical condition.
