Brooke Walker reportingA Layton teacher is retiring after working nearly three decades in the public school system. DeeAnne Cox has gone beyond the textbooks. Her students and fellow teachers say she will leave behind lessons of love.

We surprised her with a High 5 earlier this week.

Mrs. Cox is known for starting each school day at Mountain View Elementary with a smile and a song, so it seemed only appropriate we dropped in mid-verse.

We told her, "We tried to calculate the number of kids you have taught over these last many, many years, and we couldn't come up with a number, so we're rounding up to thousands: thousands of kids you have taught and influenced."

B.J. Mortensen, another teacher, said, "We think she is just about the most amazing teacher on our faculty. We love her so much and she has done an awesome job. I know she has a signature good-bye that indicates the kind of teacher she is. She always says ‘love you long time, see you tomorrow.'"

We asked Mrs. Cox, "Twenty-eight years is a long time to be working in the school system. What do you get in return?"

She answered, "Lots of love, squeezes, hugs and notes; lots of rewards."

Student Abegail Faz said, "She has a cool sense of humor and she is the nicest teacher I've ever met."

Mrs. Cox said, "Teaching is like having a big family, and you love every single one of them, and you want every single one of them to be the best they can be."

"I have hopefully instilled something in their lives while I've been here," she said.

Mrs. Cox received a KSL Swag Bag, which included tickets to the American Family Festival happening June 2 through 7.
