CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada conservation and outdoors groups plan to rally against a Senate resolution asking the federal government to transfer public lands to the state.
Groups including the Sierra Club, Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the Nevada Conservation League are scheduled to rally outside the legislative building on Monday afternoon before a hearing on Senate Joint Resolution 1. The measure will be discussed in the Senate Legislative Operations and Elections Committee.
The Republican-backed resolution urges the federal government to transfer at least 7.2 million acres of public land to Nevada.
Protesters say transfers would send public lands into private hands, closing them off to hunting, fishing and other recreational activities.
Resolution proponents say federal officials administer two-thirds of land in Nevada, and a transfer could open the door for economic development.
