Coco Warner ReportingUtah is sending 61 competitors to China and they're hoping to bring home the gold, but their "sport" may surprise you.
What is it about a choir singing in unison that leaves such a powerful impression? And even more impressive, these singers are seven to 18-years old.
Kathy Sorenson, International Children's Choir Dir.: "They represent children all over the world. So they each have a different country's costume and they often sing music from different countries; like right now they're doing Germany."
The International Children's Choir has been performing for the last 16 years and are a popular welcoming committee for Utah's visiting dignitaries.
Kathy Sorenson, International Children's Choir Dir.: "Princess of Norway, Prince and Princess of Jordan, President Fox!"
And now, they'll be performing for an international judging committee for the World Choir Games, a choir competition of Olympic proportions that is taking place in China. They're going for the gold in two divisions-- the Children's and Religious categories.
Leki Mahe, Choir member: "I feel okay except that we're doing it against older grown-ups, so I'm kind of nervous that we might not."
Organizing this trip takes an Olympic-sized effort. 117 people are headed to China, 61 are choir members.
Kathy Sorenson: "We'll see everything. We'll sing on the Great Wall and we'll see the terracotta warriors."
And they'll share their love of music, singing swifter, higher and stronger.
Elena Todorova, Choir Member: "They say they love the costumes and just how together we are in our sound."
The International Children's Choir leaves for China on Sunday, July 9th. They return July 26th.
