PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — A Cornell University sophomore has been indicted in the shotgun slaying of his CEO father in western New York.
Charles Tan appeared briefly Friday in Pittsford Town Court, where he was arraigned this week on second-degree murder charges.
The Monroe County sheriff's office says the 19-year-old used a shotgun to kill 49-year-old Ling "Jim" Tan on Monday night at the family's home in suburban Rochester.
His father was president and CEO of Dynamax Imaging in nearby Canandaigua.
Charles Tan's attorney, James Nobles, tells the Democrat & Chronicle of Rochester (http://on.rocne.ws/1E8X3zM) that Jim Tan was abusive to his wife and two sons.
The newspaper reports that a former high school classmate has started a fundraiser to help with Charles Tan's legal fees. So far, it has raised nearly $50,000.
