BOUNTIFUL — A 64-year-old woman was killed Tuesday night when she was hit by a car while trying to cross Main Street.

The woman was attempting to cross to the east side of Main Street near 1500 North about 6:45 p.m. when the accident occurred, Bountiful Police Lt. Dave Edwards said.

"She crossed through a gap in traffic and tried to dart across the road and was struck by a vehicle going northbound on Main Street," Edwards said.

The woman was taken to Lakeview Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her name was not immediately released Tuesday.

Edwards said the woman was not crossing at a crosswalk. The driver who hit her, a 74-year-old man, did not appear to be speeding and was not impaired, he said.

The accident was witnessed by about five or six people, Edwards said.

"Witnesses described that there were cars in front of her and cars behind her going southbound when she darted across into the northbound lanes, apparently not seeing the car coming toward her," he said.

Main Street in Bountiful was closed in all directions between 1350 North and Pages Lane, according to South Davis Metro Fire. No estimate was given for when it would reopen.

More details will be posted as they become available.
