WEST JORDAN — A house fire near 5200 West and 7000 South has displaced two elderly residents, two of their grandchildren, and their two service dogs.

Although no one was injured, the home is uninhabitable, officials said.

The fire began about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The homeowners were first alerted by their neighbors of a fire on the back of their house. By the time they evacuated, the fire had spread to the inside of both levels of the home.

The fire caused significant damage to the building’s back and interior.

West Jordan Fire Battalion Chief Steve Holmes said it was “hard to put a value” on the damages, but they are significant enough that the home is not currently habitable.

Holmes said the fire was “put out about as fast as it could have been put out,” thanks to the work of teams from the Unified, West Jordan and South Jordan fire departments.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Saturday.

The Utah Red Cross and members of the church the homeowners attend are assisting the couple, their grandchildren and their dogs.
