PROVO — Geoff Martzen directed BYU’s signing day efforts during two seasons in Provo.

Coincidentally, one day after finishing his second class, the 26 year old signed on the dotted line — for one of the Cougars’ former regional rivals.

Martzen will join Colorado State as the director of player personnel for the Rams’ new coaching staff, including head coach Mike Bobo, the school announced Friday. The former Georgia offensive coordinator replaced Jim McElwain in December, who recently departed for the head coaching job at Florida after leading the Rams to a 10-3 season in 2014.

Martzen broke his own news late Thursday night on his Twitter account, even posting a picture of him signing a paper with a Colorado State letterhead.

The head coach of his new team quickly offered praise for the Rams' latest recruit.

“Geoff has worked with some of the best programs in the country, so we are very excited to have him at Colorado State,” Bobo said in a news release. “He brings a wealth of knowledge in recruiting and organization skills.”

In two seasons in Provo, Martzen functioned as the Cougars’ director of player personnel and on-campus recruiting efforts, coordinating official visits for recruits and helping garner a pair of highly touted recruiting classes — including BYU’s 20-man signing class Wednesday.

Martzen worked at Alabama in 2012, then went to Boise State in 2013, assisting in the recruitment of high school and junior college recruits at both stops. He holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Fresno State, and recently said during a Twitter Q&A that he aspires to be an NFL general manager.
