NOVE MESTO, Czech Republic (AP) — Tarjei Boe shot cleanly at the last shooting to give Norway victory in a biathlon World Cup mixed relay on Friday, while Yana Romanova and Alexey Volkov teamed up for Russia to win the World Cup's first single mixed relay.
Boe crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 49.2 seconds to edge Ondrej Moravec of the Czech Republic by 4.1 seconds in front of 32,000 spectators.
The Norwegian team also included Fanny Welle-Strand Horn, Tiril Eckhoff and Johannes Thingnes Boe.
Ukraine was third, 1:21.3 behind.
The mixed relay has two women in each team skiing a 6-kilometer leg, with two men each doing 7.5-kilometers. By contrast, the new, single mixed relay features one woman and one man, skiing 6 and 7.5-kilometer loops respectively.
Earlier Friday, Volkov anchored Russia to a comfortable victory, nearly 21.5 seconds ahead of Norway's team of Marte Olsbu and Henrik L'Abee-Lund in the new event, which is designed for greater spectator appeal.
Volkov went ahead after Germany's Erik Lesser struggled at the final shooting range. Lesser had to race three penalty laps and Germany had to settle for fourth.
Juliya Dzhyma and Artem Tyshchenko were third for Ukraine, 24.6 seconds back.
The World Cup meet continues with sprint events on Saturday.
