At the beginning of the year, UDOT, the Utah Highway Patrol and other partners launched a meaningful highway safety campaign called "Zero Fatalities." We remind you of that laudable goal as we head into a long holiday weekend.

The idea of zero fatalities - of no one dying in vehicle crashes - may seem unrealistic in view of the way far too many motorists drive. Accidents, unfortunately, happen. Already this year, at least 108 people have died in 99 crashes on Utah highways.

So much for zero fatalities, you say! On-the-other-hand, what if the scope of the goal is narrowed. How about zero fatalities this holiday weekend! How about zero fatalities in your town, your neighborhood, indeed, your family!

To do it, slow down. Speed, still, is the number one factor in fatal wrecks.

Buckle up! Far too many people still stubbornly refuse to use life-saving safety restraints.

Don't drive drowsy! Drowsiness results in a lot of accidents. It's just as dangerous as drunk driving.
Of course, never, ever drink and drive.
And, avoid distractions such as cell phones.

KSL urges Utah motorists to make zero fatalities their personal goal. As the "Zero Fatalities" campaign literature states, "it is a goal we can all live with."
