SALT LAKE CITY — David Dee believes it was a matter of inches that kept him from being hurt Wednesday when a sport utility vehicle landed on the hood of his car.

Dee was stopped at a red light, waiting to turn left from Sunnyside Avenue onto northbound Foothill Drive when the SUV and another car crashed almost in front of him.

The driver of the SUV had been heading north on Foothill Drive. When he tried to turn left onto Sunnyside Avenue, he was hit by the driver of a car traveling south on Foothill Drive, according to witnesses at the scene.

"First of all, I couldn't believe that they actually collided," Dee said. "Then I really couldn't believe (the SUV) was coming toward me."

The SUV rolled once, coming to rest on the hood of Dee's car. Seeing the bottom of the vehicle growing closer and closer in his windshield "was terrifying," he said.

"I'm just counting my lucky stars," Dee said. "If I had pulled forward another 6 inches (at the light), it would have been a real problem."

None of the drivers or passengers involved in the crash were injured, according to Salt Lake police.
