Gene Kennedy Reporting A fire started in one of the buildings at the University of Utah Research Park. Forty to 50 people were forced to evacuate. They stayed outside for about two hours.
The fire broke out at 4:15 am at ARUP laboratories at 500 South Chipeta Way. The building's sprinkler system put the fire out.
Those who were evacuated say they were forced to leave what they were working on, gather in their respective groups, and wait for the fire department to arrive. Ryan Reese describes the evacuation as calm and says employees knew where to go during the drill.
The employees were allowed back in the building around 6 am. They were anxious to return because they say the samples they were working on were critical.
The fire apparently started when an appliance left plugged in overnight started some papers on fire.
No one was injured in the fire.
