(KSL News) -- Firefighters closed a portion of 900 South this morning to battle a fire at an abandoned house.
Firefighters were worried about the flames spreading because the house is tucked between business buildings.
They were able to quickly knock the flames down, but that didn't stop the smoke, which could be smelled as far west as the freeway.
Asst. Fire Chief Dennis McKone, Salt Lake City Fire Dept.: "In these older structures they used heavier timbers. This house is probably 80 to 90 years old. Heavy structure, built up paint over the years. So when it caught fire it let off a lot of heavy, heavy smoke."
Investigators are considering it suspicious, but say it does not look like it is connected to other recent house fires in the valley.
