ST. GEORGE — A man, who lost control of his scooter and was later struck by a passing vehicle, died Tuesday as a result of his injuries and was identified Wednesday.
The accident occurred Tuesday around 6:50 a.m. near 700 S. 900 East, according to St. George police. Dispatchers received a 911 call from an eyewitness and officers responded to the scene of the accident.
Scott Wesley Jones was riding a motorized scooter, heading eastbound on 700 South and had just traveled under the I-15 overpass when he lost control of the scooter, police said. A preliminary investigation showed the scooter began to slide and came to rest in the outside lane, near the curb.
Jones was ejected from the scooter and landed in the adjacent lane from his scooter, police said.
A driver came upon the accident and stopped their vehicle, turning on the hazard lights. Another vehicle approached the accident, passed the first vehicle and struck Jones, police said. The driver stopped and remained on scene and cooperated with police when they arrived.
Investigators are trying to determine why Jones lost control and believe wet roads may have been a contributing factor.
700 South was closed between 1000 East and 800 East for almost three hours during the investigation.
