SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say five members of a Utah family found dead last fall died from methadone and other drugs and the parents worried about a "pending apocalypse." Springville Police Chief J. Scott Finlayson says authorities determined the cause of death was "drug toxicity," and the parents and the 14-year-old committed suicide. The other two children's deaths were ruled homicides, but there were no signs of a struggle.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Mormon church leaders are making a national appeal for a "balanced approach" in the clash between gay rights and religious freedom. The church is promising to support some housing and job protections for gays and lesbians in exchange for legal protections for believers who object to the behavior of others. The church insists it is making no changes in doctrine.

KANAB, Utah (AP) — A Utah animal sanctuary says a dog that escaped death in Indiana — a result of an ultimatum in the will of its late owner — has died. Best Friends Animal Society said in a blog post that it euthanized the dog named Bela after tests revealed fast-growing cancer in the dog's lungs. The dog's owner dictated in her will that the dog be sent to Best Friends or be euthanized.

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Authorities in Utah say a former Ogden police officer has been charged with felony drug distribution to obtain the painkiller Oxycodone. Don Johnson had been employed as an officer with the city since August 2008. He resigned earlier this month.
