Penn beats St. Joseph's 56-52 in Big 5 matchup

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Tony Hicks scored 15 points and Darien Nelson-Henry 14 to lead Penn over St. Joseph's 56-52 on Saturday night at The Palestra.

Penn (5-10) notched its lone win in four Big 5 games while St. Joseph's (8-10) dropped to 1-2 in Philadelphia's city series with La Salle left to play.

Greg Louis added 10 points for the Quakers, who led by 10 with 5:06 remaining.

Shavar Newkirk's second 3-pointer of the season got the Hawks within 51-49 with 34 seconds left. But Hicks and Louis then combined for five free throws, enough to hold off St. Joseph's which got a 3-pointer from DeAndre' Bembry with nine seconds remaining.

Bembry had 25 points for the Hawks, who shot only 33.9 percent and were 5 of 24 from the arc. Chris Wilson grabbed 10 rebounds.

Penn shot 46.3 percent and had a 37-31 rebounding edge to help offset 19 turnovers.
