LONDON (AP) — A British comedian plans to give popular Euroskeptic politician Nigel Farage a run for his money in May's national election.
Al Murray announced Wednesday that he plans to run against U.K. Independence Party leader Farage in the southern England seat of Thanet South.
Murray will run in the persona of his best known comic character, a superpatriotic bartender called The Pub Landlord.
Farage's affable, beer-loving personality has helped his right-wing party gain copious media coverage and growing popular support. UKIP advocates tighter immigration rules and British withdrawal from the European Union.
Murray's platform includes a pledge "that the U.K. will leave Europe by 2025 and the edge of the solar system by 2050." He also promises to cut the price of a pint of beer to a penny (1.5 cents).
