Lance Bandley reportingA battle in Orem over political mailers has many asking questions.
The postcard from Representative Jim Ferrin arrived in mailboxes over the weekend. The message has an official statement by the LDS Church about hate crimes legislation and is posed as a response to Ferrin's opponent, who brought up the hate crimes issue.
"The LDS Church is a respected organization in this community that had previously specifically commented on house bill 90. I feel it was a reasonable issue to weigh into," says Ferrin.
Sandstrom says he did send out mailers about hate crimes and Ferrin's voting record, but feels Ferrin went too far on the postcard.
"That Mr. Ferrin's campaign had some sort of church endorsement or at least was in line with the Church and the stand the Church was taking," says Sandstrom.
Ferrin says if the LDS statement can be used on the legislative floor for debate, it can be used during the campaign.
