SALT LAKE CITY — The woman accused of giving birth in her basement and putting her newborn daughter in a trash can two days later made a brief appearance in court Monday.
A competency review hearing to determine whether experts believe Alicia Marie Englert, 23, is mentally competent to proceed with her court case was scheduled for Monday. Attorneys, however, told 3rd District Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills that while the two reports have been completed, they still need time to review them.
The hearing was continued until Jan. 26.
Englert is charged with attempted murder, a first-degree felony. Prosecutors contend she knew what she did was wrong. Her parents, however, have said their daughter has "special needs" and "doesn't process things correctly."
Also during Monday's hearing, prosecutors asked to state for the record that they were opposed to the "goodbye" meeting that took place between Englert and the baby under the watch of the Division of Child and Family Services. Englert's mother confirmed previously that the meeting had taken place and that the baby, who is in a foster home, was doing well.
Englert did not speak as she stood at the podium next to her attorney Monday during the brief hearing. She was then quickly escorted from the building surrounded by her attorney and parents without comment.
