SPRINGVILLE — Most people have their New Year’s Day traditions, but for most people they don’t include jumping into an ice-cold pond.
Then again, most people aren’t Brian Stauffer.
For 12 consecutive years, Brian Stauffer and his sons have gathered at a backyard pond at high noon on New Year's Day to experience something most people would never think of: an ice-cold plunge to help ring in the new year.
“It’s a little crazy; a good way to start the year,” said Eric Stauffer, Brian’s son.
Once joined by many, the number of plungers has dwindled over the years.
“There used to be 30, 40 people around the pond, but now there’s just us," Brian said prior to Thursday's jump. "We’re the sole survivors.”
Even with just three people taking the plunge — and a fiancee, the family dog and KSL’s camera as spectators — it was still a moment to remember.
“It’s a great day to be alive!” Brian yelled, coming out of the water.
Following their yearly plunge, the Stauffers have another family tradition: snuggling up to a warm fireplace and watching football.
