RENO, Nev. (AP) — Reno-area school trustees are agreeing to pay $120,000 to settle a wrongful termination dispute stemming from former district police Chief Mike Mieras' firing last June. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the agreement now goes before a Washoe County District Court Judge, who presided over a settlement hearing earlier this month. Martinez was removed as superintendent in July.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Washoe County commission has chosen a former deputy director of the state health and human services department to fill a vacancy in the Nevada Assembly. Commissioners voted to appoint Democrat Amber Joiner to the Assembly District 24 seat. She replaces Democrat David Bobzien, who was appointed to the Reno City Council earlier this month. He filled a vacancy left when councilmember Hillary Schieve was elected mayor.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police say an 85-year-old woman who was in a crash in Las Vegas over the summer died of her injuries months later in Minnesota. Murlen Baden was a passenger in a Cadillac on July 24 when the 85-year-old driver suffered a medical episode and veered into two pine trees on the side of the road. Baden and the driver were taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas with injuries that didn't appear to be life-threatening at the time.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Investigators are blaming an unattended candle for sparking a fire that gutted a North Las Vegas mobile home while four people inside escaped. North Las Vegas fire officials say no one was injured, but the mobile home was left uninhabitable. Damage was estimated at $12,000.
