LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas Police say 30-year-old James Downing is the officer who shot and wounded a man holding a butcher knife in each hand after the man lunged toward officers. Police released the officer's identity yesterday and said Downing had been placed on routine paid leave during a review of the incident. Downing has been with Las Vegas Police since January 2007.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada fire official says a landscaper was high up in a palm tree when he lost consciousness and eventually died after being trapped by cut fronds. The Clark County coroner didn't immediately identify the man or determine a cause of death. Fire officials say crews used a ladder truck to reach the man and cut the fronds away, but they found he was already dead.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Cirque du Soleil officials say a performer was injured during the finale of the company's Las Vegas-based Beatles "Love" show. A Cirque spokeswoman says the performer was transported to a local hospital but she offered no other information about what happened. She says the performer was taken to the hospital as part of the entertainment company's protocol for handling injuries.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A.J. Hess hit three 3-pointers and finished with 21 points to lead Southern Utah past South Carolina State 66-56 yesterday in the Las Vegas Classic. Southern Utah won its third game of the season to best last year's record of 2-27.
