CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has appointed former newspaper publisher and editor Rex Steninger to a vacant seat on the Elko County Commission. Sandoval says the 59-year-old Steninger will fill the vacancy created by the death in October of Commissioner Grant Gerber. Gerber died from injuries suffered when he fell from a horse in Kansas during a cross-country ride protesting a federal crackdown on livestock grazing. He was 72.
ELKO, Nev. (AP) — More than a dozen Nevada mine workers are safe after spending a rainy night in their trucks when a slide blocked the exit road from the bottom of an open pit gold mine. A Barrick Gold Corp. spokesman confirmed all 14 miners were rescued and no one was hurt after a wall failed Sunday afternoon at the Bald Mountain mine about 70 miles southeast of Elko. A Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman says the men were rescued by helicopter.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Caesars Entertainment Corp. officials say pop star Jennifer Lopez will perform one night only — New Year's Eve night — at The Colosseum on the Las Vegas Strip. The company's announcement said the musical star will perform her greatest hits and feature 25 musicians on stage.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — LaDarrien Williams scored 16 points and Harrison Hawkins had 15 to lead Abilene Christian past South Carolina State 65-59 in the Las Vegas Classic yesterday. Williams and Hawkins each scored 11 in the second half. Edward Stephens scored 14 points and Darryl Palmer grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.
