HAVANA (AP) — Cuban President Raul Castro has told Cuba's parliament that detente with Washington won't change the communist system he leads. He said Cuba will not "abandon the ideas that it has struggled for" in order to improve relations with the United States. Also appearing at the twice-yearly meeting of the National Assembly were three men recently freed by the U.S. after serving long prison terms for spying. They were treated to a standing ovation.

MIAMI (AP) — Protesters are gathering in Miami for a demonstration against President Barack Obama's plan to normalize relations with the Cuba. Some are waving flags and chanting "Obama, traitor!" A Cuban opposition leader from the island is expected to speak this afternoon.

WILLOW CREEK, Calif. (AP) — Officials say a California Highway Patrol officer has fatally shot a 17-year-old who attacked him with a machete. The Highway Patrol tells the Eureka Times-Standard that it happened Thursday when the officer responded to a report of a car hitting a telephone pole in the community of Willow Creek. Police say after he was attacked, the officer fired at the teen, then locked himself in his patrol car and called for backup. Police say the boy died at the scene and the officer was hospitalized with serious injuries.

SEYMOUR, Ind. (AP) — More than two dozen people are injured after a double-decker bus crashed in southern Indiana early this morning. State Police say the Megabus was on its way from Chicago to Atlanta with about 70 passengers when it slid off Interstate 65 and rolled on its side. Twenty-seven people were treated for minor injuries at one hospital and a pregnant woman with a cut to her head was taken to a hospital in Indianapolis.

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — A Florida golfer may have made history as the oldest person to record a hole in one. The PGA of America says 103-year-old Gus Andreone of Sarasota scored the ace Wednesday at Palm Aire Country Club, likely breaking the record set by a 102-year-old woman in 2007. Andreone told Tampa Bay television station Fox 13 News that it's the eighth time he's made a hole in one since 1939. And he says he looks forward to doing it again.
