LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — All first-graders in Calcasieu Parish will get a book this Christmas, free of charge.
KPLC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1z17ciB ) the Calcasieu Federation of Teachers applied for a grant to give the books to more than 2,000 students at all 36 elementary schools in the parish.
The books are for the students to keep and take home.
Michelle Joubert, principal of John J. Johnson Elementary, says first grade is where students are exposed to decoding of words and hopefully they will use those skills they've learned with the books that they're receiving.
