SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — More than 180 employees will lose their jobs next year as power company PacifiCorp plans to close its coal mine in Emery County. PacifiCorp Energy president and CEO Michael Dunn says that it no longer makes financial sense to keep the Deer Creek Mine near Huntington open. The mine began operation in 1974.

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — A 29-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for chaining his 7-year-old son to a bed while he was at work. The Herald Journal reports that the judge rejected a recommendation from prosecutors that the man serve only house arrest. The boy wasn't injured and the father's attorney said he couldn't afford day care.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Air Force officials have identified the airman from Hill Air Force Base who was killed along with his wife in a rollover accident over the weekend. Thirty-four-year-old staff Sgt. Derek Ramos and his wife Emily Ramos were killed Saturday in an off-roading accident in Bountiful. Their two children survived the accident and are being cared by family members.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An electrician is pleading guilty to starting a fire in February that caused $6 million in damage to an unfinished Salt Lake City apartment building. Dustin Bowman, a 34-year-old from Bountiful pleaded guilty to one count of arson as part of a deal with prosecutors. The only motive he gave to investigators was that he wanted to see the fire department.
