NIZHNY TAGIL, Russia (AP) — Anders Fannemel of Norway earned his first career ski jump World Cup victory on Saturday by finishing first in a large hill night event.
Fannemel jumped 132 and 133 meters for a total score of 263.1 points, 5.8 points ahead of Austria's Gregor Schlierenzauer, who had been seeking to extend his record haul of World Cup wins to 54.
"It's an amazing feeling," Fannemel said after securing the win on the HS134 hill in Russia's Ural mountain city of Nizhny Tagil. "I feel I've been close the whole winter and today I managed two good jumps in the competition."
Schlierenzauer, who had forced Fannemel into second place in Lillehammer last week, also jumped 133 meters in his second attempt, one meter short of the hill record set by Fannemel in Friday's qualifying.
Severin Freund of Germany was third with 254.9 points.
Fannemel took the overall World Cup lead from Czech jumper Roman Koudelka, who skipped the event. Slovenia's Peter Prevc moved to second, with Koudelka third.
