LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard officials say they plan to open for the season with a beginner slope at least, whether natural snow arrives or not. Officials with the resort north of Las Vegas said yesterday that it would open by tomorrow with limited terrain and offer scenic views on round-trip chair lift rides.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- UNLV is taking a gamble on its next football coach. Based on the success Tony Sanchez had at nearby Bishop Gorman High School, the university's hierarchy believes it's worth the risk. UNLV named Sanchez as its head football coach yesterday, joining a small group of Division I schools to hire a head coach directly from the high school ranks.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — A break in the Trans-Canyon Water Pipeline and inclement weather delaying equipment from reaching repair crews has resulted in a water shortage at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Officials say visitors hiking to Phantom Ranch must be self-sufficient and be prepared to carry or treat all drinking water. All Grand Canyon National Park trails remain open.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Professional poker player Dan Bilzerian is scheduled to appear in Las Vegas Justice Court on Jan. 9 to face two felony counts of possessing bomb-making materials. The criminal complaint ties Bilzerian to an investigation of an explosion in the remote desert near Vegas.
