Sam Penrod reporting A 39-year old woman, hiking by herself in the mountains between Alta and Brighton ski areas, got lost and injured today.
Sgt. Todd Griffiths,Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office: "She's lost, doesn't know how to get down. Rather than get herself into a more serious situation, she called for help, which in this case was the smart thing to do."
The woman called for help on her cell phone around 6:30 Sunday evening. She said she had fallen and had become disoriented, not knowing which way to go to return to her car at Brighton.
Four teams searched the location where the woman thought she was. However, she was no where to be found.
The Utah Highway Patrol Helicopter was called in, and spotted the woman around 8pm. At the time of this report, the teams had reached her and were in the process of bringing her down the mountain.
Sgt. Todd Griffiths,Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office: "She started this morning so she's been out hiking all day she hiked from our location here at Brighton all the way over to Alta in Little Cottonwood and then it was on her way back over to the Brighton ski resort that she lost her way."
Crews were able to reach the woman before dark. They had been concerned about the cool night temperatures at higher elevations. The woman was prepared, carrying food, water, a cell phone and a map.
