SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A first round of layoffs at Benedictine University in Springfield will begin at the end of this month.
The job cuts are a result of the school's decision to drop the undergraduate program at its Springfield campus. It announced in October that it would instead focus on its master's and doctoral programs as well as the segment of adults seeking degrees.
The (Springfield) State Journal Register reports (http://bit.ly/1yASqxP ) that six admissions office employees have been notified of layoffs effective Dec. 31.
The school has also filed a formal notice of layoffs with the state, something that is required for cuts of 25 or more full-time employees.
Initially, the school had said it would cut a total of 75-100 jobs.
Spokeswoman Nicole Selinger said Friday the exact number is unclear.
