SALT LAKE CITY — TRAX riders will be getting an early Christmas gift this month.

Beginning Dec. 15, the Utah Transit Authority will temporarily offer fares of just 15 cents for riders using the UTA Farepay card. The promotion celebrates the 15th anniversary of the agency's light rail system that began carrying passengers on Dec. 4, 1999.

Initially, TRAX ran from Salt Lake City south through the towns of South Salt Lake, Murray, Midvale and Sandy. Two years later, service began on the line to the University of Utah.

Service has expanded since then, with segments today including the Green Line, which transports riders between Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City and Salt Lake City International Airport; the Red Line, which provides service between Daybreak in West Jordan and University Hospital; and the Blue Line, which travels from the Intermodal Hub extension in Salt Lake City south to Draper.

UTA Quick Facts
  • 1st TRAX line ran from Sandy to Salt Lake City
  • Ridership has grown from an average 19,458 riders/day in 2000 to 64,554 riders/day in 2014
  • More than 44 million people rode TRAX last year alone

The 15-cent promotional fare will be available this month from Dec. 15 through Dec. 31 only for light rail commuters using the reloadable, electronic Farepay card. The cards can be purchased at various retail outlets along the Wasatch Front. A one-time $3 activation fee is required.

Cash payments are not included in this promotion and the 15-cent fare is good only on TRAX. UTA will offer other promotions this month as part of the celebration, including having employees distribute free, preloaded Farepay cards as well as other giveaways
