BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana University has been awarded $6.6 million to create a science and engineering cloud for the National Science Foundation that thousands of U.S. researchers will be able to tap into.
IU says it's expected to receive a total of about $11 million from the National Science Foundation over the next five years to create, implement and operate the new cloud, called Jetstream.
Cloud computing is the use of large groups of remote servers to allow for centralized data storage with online access.
IU vice president for information technology Brad Wheeler says Jetstream will include a menu of "virtual machines" designed to support research in biology, atmospheric science, economics and other fields.
Jetstream will allow creators of new research software to make those tools easily available to users, speeding their adoption
