INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The White House says American aid worker Peter Kassig has been killed by Islamic State militants. Who released a video showing Kassig had been beheaded. Kassig's parents say they are "heartbroken" by his death but "incredibly proud" of his humanitarian work. Kassig was captured last year while delivering relief supplies to refugees of Syria's civil war.
FORT IRWIN, Calif. (AP) — The U.S. military is accelerating its efforts to train and advise Iraqi forces that are fighting Islamic State militants. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says the speed-up was recommended by the head of U.S. Central Command. According to Hagel, U.S. special operations troops in western Anbar province are getting an early start on the train-and-advise effort.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A strong magnitude-6.7 earthquake has struck off the coast of New Zealand but there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The United States Geological Survey says te quake struck Monday morning 110 miles northeast of the North Island city of Gisborne. The quake's epicenter was at a depth of 21.7 miles.
UNDATED (AP) — Federal drug enforcement agents are checking the medical staffs of NFL teams as part of an investigation into former players' claims that teams mishandled prescription drugs. A Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman says there were no arrests today during unannounced visits to two teams: The 49ers' and Tampa Bay. He says specific teams aren't being targeted.
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — Kevin Harvick is claiming his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup championship with a win in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Harvick used a risky call by crew chief Rodney Childers for four tires during the final pit stop to drive through the field and grab the win that capped his dream first season with Stewart-Haas Racing.
