Keith McCord Reporting It's election season-- the Utah primary is next Tuesday-- and you've probably noticed some of the campaign ads that are running right now.
Well, we just learned of another election that everybody can vote in. It's an unusual race to say the least.
That's right. Did you know that the Utah Jazz Bear is on a ballot? He's one of six candidates that are on the ballot for the sports "Mascot Hall of Fame." Yes there is such a thing!
The Utah Jazz Bear has been entertaining us since 1993. He's always refining his routines, and there's probably not a trick he won't attempt! And that's why he's a nominee for the 2006 Mascot Hall of Fame!
Andy Chudd/ Vote for "Bear": "He's got a huge fan base. The amazing this is people love him not only in the state and outside of the state."
The Mascot Hall of Fame was established last year, and it's mission is basically to honor the performers who spend countless hours refining their routines to entertain us. And also recocognize their never-ending community relations activities.
Andy Chudd has worked with Bear for years.
Andy Chudd/ Vote for "Bear"!: "He does appearances in every single school district in Utah, virtually every sheriff's department and fire department. He's always the first guy to come and the last guy to leave."
The Bear has some fierce competition on this year's ballot:
- The Seattle Mariners Moose;
- "Clutch" the Bear, who performs for the Houston Rockets;
- The Cleveland Indians have a mascot called "Slider";
- There's KC the Wolf with the NFL's Chiefs;
- And, Wool E. Bull, with the Durham Bulls minor league baseball team.
Right now, Bear is trailing the Mariner's Moose by more than 6-thousand votes. But his pal Andy says we can help by going to the mascot webpage.
Andy Chudd/ Vote for "Bear": "Click on vote, and vote as many times as you can, and tell as many different people as you can to vote for him. Maybe he could win! He's sure deserving of the honor."
Winners will be honored in Philadelphia August 15th. There will be a big party, and everyone will be in costume!
