SPANISH FORK — A 5-year-old boy died Sunday night from injuries sustained when he was struck by a freight train in Spanish Fork earlier in the day, police said.
A group of three boys was apparently playing on the train tracks prior to the accident shortly before 5:30 p.m. The Union Pacific train was traveling about 40 mph when the accident occurred, police said.
The boy was transported to the hospital by ambulance for treatment of his injuries, but the other children apparently left before police arrived at the railroad crossing at 400 N. 1200 East, said Spanish Fork Police Lt. Matt Johnson.
A passerby initially reported to police that the boy had been struck but a second child had jumped out of the way, Johnson said. Police later said three children had been playing in the area.
