BOUNTIFUL — Police have identified the man who was killed during a head-on collision that closed a Bountiful road for several hours Monday.
The accident occurred just before 12 p.m. near 500 West and 400 North, according to Bountiful police. The driver of a silver BMW was heading south on 500 West when the driver went into northbound lanes and collided head-on with a Dodge pickup truck, police said.
Tuesday, police identified the victim as Bill Witsman, 64, of Layton. Witsman died at the scene of the accident and the 37-year-old driver of the pickup truck was transported to Lakeview Hospital with minor injuries.
Multiple witnesses had reported seeing the BMW traveling southbound on I-15 at a high rate of speed and weaving through traffic, police said. When the driver of the BMW exited the freeway onto southbound 500 West, police said he collided with a concrete barrier. Then the driver continued heading south for about .25 miles until he hit the Dodge pickup truck.
The cause of the accident was still unknown Tuesday, but Bountiful police Lt. Dave Edwards said investigators had ruled out alcohol as a factor. Edwards said the family stated Witsman was not suicidal and police are waiting for the medical examiner's report to see if an unknown medical condition may have caused the accident.
