NEW YORK (AP) — A doctor who recently returned to New York City from West Africa is being tested for the Ebola virus. Mayor Bill de Blasio says all protocols were followed and it doesn't appear the doctor had been showing symptoms for very long and didn't have widespread contact with others. Test results are expected today.
BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Mali's health minister says the West African country has confirmed its first case of Ebola. The patient is said to be a 2-year-old girl who came from neighboring Guinea. Mali becomes the sixth West African country to report an Ebola case — though nearly all the cases and deaths have occurred in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The World Health Organization says the disease has infected nearly 10,000 and has killed nearly 4,900.
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — The Canadian who killed a soldier and launched an attack on Parliament apparently acted alone. That's what authorities are saying. Michael Zehaf-Bibeau (zeh-HAHF' bih-BOH') is described as having a record of petty crimes and drug abuse. He was a recent convert to Islam and had been living in a homeless shelter in Ottawa.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The father of a man charged with jumping the White House fence last night says his son was mentally disturbed but not violent. Dominic Adesanya (ah-deh-SAHN'-yah) has been ordered held without bond. While appearing before a magistrate, he resisted being taken away and started talking as two deputy marshals removed him from the courtroom.
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — A midair collision in suburban Washington between a helicopter and a small plane has killed three people and injured two others. The crash happened near the Frederick Municipal Airport in Maryland. A fire official says the helicopter was involved in a training exercise.
