(KSL News) West Nile virus has been detected in a batch of mosquitoes in southern Utah County, and health officials say that means human and horse cases aren't far behind.
Though no cases of West Nile virus have been found so far this year in humans, horses or chickens, the recent detection of the virus in mosquitoes is about six weeks earlier than in 2005.
Two birds recently have tested positive for the virus in Salt Lake County.
Authorities remind everyone the best way to avoid getting West Nile is to use repellents that contain DEET, wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants, get rid of standing water and make sure horses are immunized each spring.
